Intel D915GAV Motherboard and XPpro SP3 High Definition Audio Problems July 16, 2011

I just installed a fresh copy of XPpro SP3 on my video computer. Its main use is to watch movies. The computer has a Intel D915GAV Motherboard. I also went to Intel Support and downloaded the two drivers. One is for the motherboard, the other is the audio. I also downloaded the Realtek AC97 audio drivers. That should have done it.
The Problem: No Audio. In the Device Manager there was the yellow question marks on the High Definition Audio. Ok so I clicked on the question marks, one at a time and let the driver update do its thing. Then the reboot. No Audio.
Solution #1 I checked on Microsoft’s web site and they said download this KB888111  but you cant install it because it was designed  for SP2.  Oh well back to the web.  I found a neat trick tell XP that you have SP2 not SP3. You can do that  with regedit.   Go  to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows and  change CSDVersion to 200. Reboot. Install KB888111.  Change back CSDVersion to 300. Reboot.  STILL NO AUDIO.

Solution #2  Microsoft Fixit. I wont bore you I will just say: STILL NO AUDIO. (btw Fixit said everything was working!)

Solution #3 Just more of the same with no results.  We are now into the 6th or 7th hour of a 1hour reload.

Final Solution:

  1.  Go into the BIOS and turn off the integrated Realtek AC97 Audio.
  2. Install plug-and-play PCI audio card. They are cheap, under $10.00. I happened to have an old Sound-Blaster.
  3. Reboot
  4. Let XP find the drivers for you.
  5. Enjoy. Total time about 15 minutes.
